There are many drinkers out there who feel ashamed and full of guilt about their relationship with alcohol. That’s because they don’t have the real facts on why they can’t drink less.

There are many reasons why people drink more than they know they should.

Some people drink because they are socially shy, lonely, bored, unhappy, scared, want to numb difficult feelings or are worried about their future.  For others, alcohol offers a type of entertainment, distraction or relief from the stresses of life.   Many people use alcohol to push down uncomfortable thoughts especially at night when they try to get some sleep.

When you drink alcohol, a number of interesting chemical changes occur in your body that make you crave or continue more alcohol than you should.  One of those changes is an increase in dopamine, the chemical that is located in the ‘reward’ area of your brain. If alcohol is something you use to dampen the stresses and strains of life, dopamine is a great way to escape. After a period of time your brain gets used to it and welcomes the extra dopamine.  The problem is that over a period of time the sensations that dopamine creates diminishes.  This is why people then need more alcohol to experience the same feeling. The alcohol consumption goes up as the tolerance to more alcohol becomes noted by the brain.

This is where the habit of drinking to deal with life starts to feel ‘normal’ and cement itself in.
